The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This story is about a young caterpillar
that goes on an eating spree throughout the week. On each day he
eats more and more. In the end he becomes a very beautiful
butterfly!
After reading the story aloud several
times, children were divided into 6 groups and asked to answer 2
questions based on Bloom's Taxonomy. They recorded the answers on
a caterpillar sheet, and read their responses to the rest of the class.
Group 1 Knowledge Questions (ability to
recall information)
1. From what does the new caterpillar
hatch?
2. Name three foods the caterpillar eats.
Group 2 Comprehension Questions (basic
understanding of information)
1. Who is the main character of the book?
2. What happens after the caterpillar forms
a cocoon?
Group 3 Application
Questions (ability to do something with the information)
1. Why must a caterpillar eat a great deal
of food before entering its cocoon?
2. Name three foods that are helpful for
you to eat.
Group 4 Analysis (ability to examine
parts of a whole)
1. What time of day is it when the
caterpillar hatches?
2. Why is there a butterfly at the end of
the story?
Group 5 Synthesis (ability to bring
together information to make something new)
1. What do you think would have happened if
the caterpillar had only eaten leaves.
2. What do you think the butterfly might do
next?
Group 6 Evaluation (ability to form and
defend an opinion)
1. How does food affect the health of a
living thing?
2. What is the best part of the story? Why?
