Bug Puppets: One of the areas we wished to focus upon during our bug unit was Creative and Cultural Expression. Our class is split fairly evenly between "performers" and shyer students. It was hoped that by having each student select a puppet that they wished to create, more students might engage in dramatic play with their creations. In preparation, I had each student select which bug they wished to create. Over the weekend, I purchased the necessary resources, and designed a template for the students to follow. After cutting the necessary body pieces out of felt, the students then had to make decisions about adding other features. At first, many tried putting the legs on the outside of the puppets. Soon, they realized that too many legs were falling off, and that there must be a better way. The next step was to glue the legs inside the body. This practice was much more successful, especially after a few finishing touches with the glue gun! Wings also caused a bit of difficulty, but it didn't take long for the students to get the hang of it. In the end, persistence (and patience!) permitted the puppets to take form, and the students took great pleasure from their work. Students At Work!
